26 August 2011 South Africa’s Department of Environmental Affairs has been presented with the Shining World Compassion Award from the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association in recognition of its efforts to protect seals. Receiving the award on behalf of the department and South African government in Pretoria on Thursday, Environmental Affairs Deputy Director-General Fundisile Mketeni said the country’s seal population was growing because of the government’s decision to protect them. Mketeni said government was committed to preserving nature. “We feel it’s our duty and mandate to protect the seal species,” he said adding that the country would continue to do so “until we are comfortable with the numbers”. Mketeni said more support was needed from other countries to support the protection of seals. South Africa harvested seals until the late 1980s, but stopped the practice in 1990. This was done on the best scientific advice and following extensive public participation. A policy decision was taken by government to only use seals for non-consumptive use and to protect seals against natural and anthropogenic threats. The policy aims to minimise threats to seals posed by pollution such as ingestion of plastics and entanglement in discarded material such as plastic or strapping cord used to offload tuna from fishing vessels. There has been a resultant 75 percent increase in the number of breeding colonies in South Africa, from 23 in 1971 to 40 in 2009. Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Soybean plants have a high demand for nitrogen as soybean grain contains a large amount of protein. An 80-bushel per acre soybean crop requires approximately 302 pounds of N per acre. As soybean yield increases, many farmers question if nitrogen supplied through fixation and the soil is adequate to maximize yield. With funding from the Ohio Soybean Council, the soybean and small grain production lab at The Ohio State University evaluated nitrogen fertilizer application to soybean in eight Ohio counties in 20 separate trials. Various nitrogen sources (urea, slow-release nitrogen, and foliar nitrogen) and application timings (pre-plant, at planting, and R3 soybean growth stage) were evaluated. Overall, four out of 20 trials resulted in a soybean yield increase with nitrogen application. At today’s soybean price, nitrogen application to soybean had a positive economic return at one location out of 20.Recently, these results from Ohio State were included in a synthesis analysis conducted by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to determine soybean response to nitrogen application across the United States. The analysis included 5,991 plot-specific yield datapoints across 16 states spanning from North Dakota to Louisiana and Nebraska to Maryland. The effect of nitrogen application on soybean yield was relatively small. A single nitrogen application was 0.9 bushel per acre greater yielding than the control (no nitrogen applied) while a split nitrogen application resulted in a 1.6 bushel per acre yield increase compared to the control. At nitrogen application rates of 100 pounds N per acre or less, soybean yield response to nitrogen application was highly variable. Fewer datapoints were available for nitrogen applications greater than 100 pounds of N per acre, but projected a nitrogen rate of 300 pounds N per acre to maximize soybean yield which is unlikely to produce a positive economic return. In fields with first-time soybean production, Rhizobia inoculant and nitrogen fertilizer may be necessary. However, in Ohio under most circumstances, application of nitrogen fertilizer is not needed in fields with a history of soybean production.
By Carol ChurchThe possibility of working from home is appealing to many people, for many reasons. Those who live in isolated areas without much commerce, people with disabilities, parents of young children, people with irregular schedules, and many others all are drawn to this convenient work situation.Military spouses, in particular, may be interested in work-at-home situations because they are portable and relatively easy to manage with the military lifestyle. However, one concern about working at home is that, unfortunately, many unscrupulous people have made a business of their own out of running “work-at-home” scams. How can workers, and especially military families, protect themselves? What Scammers WantTom Baker/PhotospinTypically, those operating these types of scams are looking for two things: your money and/or your personal information. It may be obvious to most of us that some people are trying to get our money, but we may forget that others may be seeking to obtain our personal details for profit. (For instance, you might be told you need to hand over your bank account info or Social Security number in order to be paid.)After information or money has been sent off, it can be difficult to obtain a refund or repair the identity theft. This is why it’s so important to check out these opportunities before committing to anything.Warning SignsThe following should be considered warning signs that a job or “opportunity” is a potential scam.Being asked to pay for materialsCommon scams of this type include envelope stuffing and “home assembly” of products. Almost no one makes money at these tasks.Being asked to pay to begin a jobCommon scams of this type include:mystery shopping (while there is such a thing as legitimate mystery shopping, people rarely earn much, and you should not have to pay)check cashing/wire transfer schemesmedical transcription business trainingrebate processing“stock trading systems”In the vast majority of cases, legitimate employment opportunities will not require paying any money upfront. (One exception is some businesses where consultants sell physical products.)Hearing that you can easily earn thousands per month, that no experience is needed, etc.Anyone looking for this type of work should be skeptical of claims that one can earn a lot of money easily with no experience. If it’s so easy to make so much money, why isn’t everyone doing it?The job is appearing in many paid ads with overblown claimsConsumers should also ask themselves, why is the company paying to advertise so much? If the opportunity is good, why do they need to spend so much money on ads?In Part 2 of this series, we’ll talk about the questions to ask when pursuing a work-at-home opportunity, what to do if someone has been a victim, and multilevel marketing companies vs. pyramid schemes.References:Brunelli, L. zoom German container shipping company Hapag-Lloyd and compatriot logistics services provider DB Schenker have launched a project aimed at cutting sulfur oxide emissions in ports. In order to reduce the impact of pollution, especially in Asian and Latin American ports, a “prestigious customer” switches all of its containers shipped by Hapag-Lloyd to low-sulfur fuel.Specifically, customers pay a voluntary surcharge on each of its containers shipped through these ports, having started in mid-2017. Such surcharge is used by Hapag-Lloyd to purchase the low-sulfur fuel.Customers receive a factual statement on the fuel change for all of their containers while DB Schenker supervises the transaction. As explained, the move goes beyond current regulation. While some regions in the world provide for 0.1% sulfur content not to be exceeded when at berth, many ports still do not have any such regulations and fuel is permitted to be burnt with sulfur contents of up to 3.5% to run vessel facilities during port stays for loading and discharge.“We are proud to enter with such prestigious companies in a ground-breaking health and environmental initiative,” Andrea Dorothea Schoen, Carbon Controller and head of DB Schenker’s climate protection program and project initiator, commented.“For us this a milestone in our environmental partnership – with the shipper and the carrier alike,” Schoen added.“We jointly can pave the way for better air quality and push sustainability on the oceans,” Thorsten Haeser, CCO of Hapag-Lloyd, pointed out.
