Can You be Zack Barr’s “Arms and Legs?”

first_imgZack Barr, front left, and brother Bob Barr with (back row from left) Brian Leatherwood, Michelle Eggleston and the late Dennis Noble. (Photos courtesy of Zack Barr) By TIM KELLYWhen Dennis Noble passed away recently, Zack Barr lost more than his assistant. “Because of the man Dennis was, a friendship blossomed,” said Barr, 35, of Ocean City, who has cerebral palsy. The 56-year-old Noble was killed in a motorcycle accident in late April when his Harley-Davidson veered off Route 9 in Upper Township and struck a utility pole. Since then, a huge void has existed in Zack’s life.“I’m a social person,” Zack said. “I like to get out and about. Dennis would show up on time. He was reliable. He would get me where I wanted to go.”The two quickly forged a bond based on Zack’s sociability and love of pro sports, and Dennis’ selflessness. He lived not far from Zack, and would show up at a moment’s notice in times of need large or small. After about a year and a half of service, the relationship had grown to a point the pair would chat every day.“Dennis would call me all the time,” said Zack. “It didn’t matter if he was working that day or not. He would just call and we’d chat.”Sometimes it would be to discuss the logistics of getting Zack to an event or a doctor’s appointment.  But more often it would be about life in general or about the teams Zack cheers for – the Phillies, Lakers and Cowboys (sorry, Eagles fans).  “We would bust each other’s chops and laugh and enjoy each other’s company,” Zack recalled.Brothers Zack (in Phillies jersey) and Bob Barr at a recent ball game in Philadelphia. As the shock of Dennis’ death began to fade and the grief subsided a bit, Zack realized the business side of their relationship needed replacing. “I don’t like the word caregiver. I don’t need one,” he said. “I prefer the word assistant.”The applicant “does not have to have a caregiver’s certification. I tell people what I need is for somebody to show up on time, get me where I’m going and to be my ‘arms and legs,’” Zack explained.Zack lives on Roosevelt Boulevard with his brother Bob, an Ocean City councilman, and his mom, Sue. “I think they turned out OK,” Sue said of her sons with a smile. “They’re healthy and they’re happy. Unfortunately, they have some physical challenges. They have not allowed that to slow them down.”Since Dennis’ passing, Zack’s best friend of 24 years, Brian Leatherwood, has tried his best to help his buddy get around. But Leatherwood works as the assistant to Bob Barr, who also has cerebral palsy. The demands of that job won’t always allow Brian to assist both brothers. Thus, the Barrs are issuing an open call for any male interested in becoming Zack’s new assistant. A male is required, he said, for safety and relational reasons.“Sometimes, language may go along the lines of being a little rough, and the physical strength required can be more suited for a man,” Bob said. “There really are a multitude of reasons why Zack is more comfortable with a guy.”Anyone interested in the job should call Bob Barr at 609-703-0750.“I’m not looking for anyone (to feel the pressure of) replacing Dennis as a friend,” Zack explained. “You can never replace losing a good friend. All I’m really looking for is getting to places on time and getting physical help when needed. Maybe it can grow into its own friendship.”Zack Barr, right, with his former assistant, the late Dennis Noble.last_img read more

Premier League suffers first postponement as Arsenal players quarantined

first_img“As a result, the players are unavailable for tonight’s (Wednesday’s) match against Manchester City and the Premier League has decided the game should be postponed.”The first postponement in the Premier League, which has a huge worldwide following, follows widespread disruption to football and other sports across the globe.Arsenal were knocked out of the Europa League by Olympiakos on February 27. Marinakis, owner of the Greek club and English side Nottingham Forest, announced on Tuesday that he had tested positive for the coronavirus. But Arsenal said the players and staff, who met Marinakis after the game at the Emirates Stadium, will return to work on Friday ahead of Saturday’s trip to Brighton. “The medical advice we have received puts the risk of them developing COVID-19 at extremely low,” it added.Olympiacos players, backroom staff and board members have all tested negative, the club said in a statement on Wednesday. The Premier League called the move a “precautionary measure” and said there were no plans to postpone any other games.Arsenal’s opponents on Saturday, struggling Brighton, tweeted that their game was still on.”Albion’s match against Arsenal this Saturday remains scheduled to go ahead as planned, in line with government advice, and following consultation with the Premier League and medical advisors. #BHAFC,” they tweeted. The postponement means Liverpool’s hopes of winning their first title since 1991 without kicking a ball have been dashed. However, should City lose to Burnley on Saturday Jurgen Klopp’s side can seal their first Premier League title on Monday with the added spice they can do so by beating city rivals Everton.  ‘We’re not happy to go’  The Football Association, though, could take a financial hit according to the Daily Mail. The FA have no insurance covering public health epidemics or what are deemed force majeure ‘acts of God’.So if they are forced to cancel matches — which seems the likely scenario for the high profile friendly with Italy on March 27 — or play them behind closed doors, it will cost them £3 million ($3.9 million) a game.  Football’s Serie A and all other sports have been put on hold in Italy, while the top two divisions in Spain and France will be played in empty stadiums for at least the next two weeks.UEFA’s Champions League and Europa League have also been both forced to arrange matches behind closed doors as the epidemic spreads.Olympiakos host Wolverhampton Wanderers in Athens this week in the Europa League, in one of the last-16 games that will be played in front of an empty stadium. Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo has joined a number of managers, including Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp, in voicing disquiet at being asked to play without fans.”If we have to go we will. But we don’t agree — we’re not happy to go,” he told Sky Sports.”Behind closed doors doesn’t make sense,” he added. “We’re pretending to live a normal life when things aren’t normal.”Topics :center_img Arsenal’s game at Manchester City on Wednesday was postponed after players from the London club were put into quarantine, making it the first Premier League football fixture to be called off because of coronavirus.Arsenal said players and four staff had been isolated at their homes after coming into contact with the owner of Greek club Olympiakos, Vangelis Marinakis, who has since tested positive for COVID-19.”We are strictly following the government guidelines which recommend that anyone coming into close contact with someone with the virus should self-isolate at home for 14 days from the last time they had contact,” an Arsenal statement said.last_img read more

Don’t rush to restart La Liga, Bale warns

first_imgReal Madrid’s Welsh forward Gareth Bale urges prudence before any return to football actionMadrid, Spain | AFP |  Real Madrid star Gareth Bale says there should be no rush to restart La Liga during the coronavirus lockdown as the Spanish football federation plans tests and a return to training.Testing players is being discussed with a view to completing the Liga season and thereby avoiding financial disaster, a source cose to La Liga told AFP on Thursday.Bale said he wanted to get back into action but felt it wise to wait and see.“Everyone wants to play football, but the most important thing is everyone stays safe, we don’t want to come back too early. We need to make sure everything is done safely so we avoid the second wave of this virus,” Bale told British broadcaster BT Sports. The Bundesliga in Germany, where there have been far fewer coronavirus deaths, said on Thursday they are “ready” to restart on May 9 but needed government approval.Rafael Ramos of the Spanish Association of Football Team Physicians said La Liga is planning to return to action in a series of stages.“The idea according to La Liga is to test everyone on April 28 and 29,” Ramos said on Spanish radio on Thursday. He added that the tests would be repeated every three or four days.La Liga president Javier Tebas said several alternatives for a return to action were being mulled with May 4 slated for the return to training.“The scenarios we are looking at could see La Liga restart as early as 28-29 May, but could also be 6-7 June or even as late as June 28,” Tebas said, calculating that the move could save Spanish clubs a billion euros in revenue if they complete La Liga and the European competitions.– Awaiting government approval – Whatever Tebas wants, Spain is under a severe lockdown quarantine and is reeling after 22,000 deaths from coronavirus in the country so far.The Spanish players union (AFE) agree with Welsh winger Bale in his call for prudence.“Ask yourself if this is really a good idea. Is it safe? isn’t our main concern everybody’s safety?,” Diego Lopez the Espanyol goalkeeper said on Wednesday.Eight Espanyol players are sick with Covid-19.Barcelona and Spain midfielder Sergio Busquets was also sceptical on the proposed dates.“I suppose it’s workable, to train without getting too close to the other guys, showering at home, but meetings and travelling to a match would be difficult,” said Busquets.Others have been more defiant.“I’m hearing stuff about May 4 or May 11. No way will I be going back to training (then), nor will I play. I’ll tell you that straight right now,” said Rafael Jimenez, a central defender at Liga 2 leaders Cadiz.Athletic Bilbao player Ander Capa was more open to a return.“I’m optimistic, I believe we’ll get restarted and I hope by June we’ll all be playing again,” he told Radio Share on: WhatsApplast_img read more

Award leaves Distell in high spirits

first_img12 November 2007South African spirits company Distell won the prestigious V&S Distiller of the Year trophy at this year’s International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) held in the UK, beating illustrious international rivals such as Diageo, Beam Global and William Grant & Sons.According to a statement issued by the IWSC organisers last week, the award is based on the company’s achievements in the competition, as well as on the range of high-quality spirits in their portfolio.Organisers said the specialist panel of judges believed Distell demonstrated “a dedicated, resolute approach to the highest standards of distilling, blending and bottling”.Distell faced stiff competition, with entries in the spirits categories increasing by 16% in 2007, making the IWSC the largest spirits competition in the UK with close on 1 300 products from 70 different producing countries.“With over 340 whiskies entered from Scotland alone, the shortlist for this trophy ran to 26 companies, and it wasn’t only the large producers who where being considered,” competition director Frances Horder said.Cape Business News reported that Distell’s strong showing was due to the outstanding results achieved by its portfolio, made up of Mainstay, Amarula Cream and brandies from the Klipdrift, Van Ryn, Oude Meester, Richelieu and Nederburg distilleries.Distell’s brandy portfolio won two gold and eight silver medals, as well as four best-of-class ratings, while Amarula Cream was voted best liqueur. The distiller’s Mainstay brand was also voted as best vodka ahead of its Russian, Polish and Finnish competitors, causing some debate, as this is a sugar cane based vodka and base ingredients for vodka are currently the subject of much dispute.“The IWSC is one of the most important industry platforms in the world. To be accorded such an honour is no mean feat,” Distell director of primary production Hennie Heyl told Cape Business News.“It is a reflection of the stringent quality standards we set ourselves and demonstrates the exceptional talent in our midst. While South Africa has to date been internationally better known for its wines, the country is starting to build an impressive reputation for other alcoholic beverages too.”The Stellenbosch-based Distell Group states that it is South Africa’s leading producer and marketer of fine wines, spirits, ciders and ready-to-drinks.
