With two outs and two strikes, Buxton hit a slow grounder to shortstop Willi Castro. One of the fastest players in baseball, Buxton blazed down the first-base line and just beat Castro’s throw, before the Twins spilled out onto the field in celebration.Jorge Alcalá (2-1) pitched two scoreless innings for the Twins, who have won five straight games and are 17-4 at home for the best mark in the major leagues.Victor Reyes homered for Detroit on Kenta Maeda’s second pitch, and starter Tarik Skubal stifled Minnesota over six innings.Maeda produced another masterpiece for the Twins, retiring 18 straight batters after Reyes sent his hanging slider into the covered-up right field seats. Maeda yielded only two hits in six innings, but a walk to Jonathan Schoop to start the seventh was the spoiler. After a single by Miguel Cabrera, Tyler Clippard relieved.Jeimer Candelario, Castro and Jorge Bonifacio each hit an RBI single before Clippard recovered to get three straight bases-loaded outs. Three runs were charged to Maeda, who still has a 1.64 ERA in three home starts with 26 strikeouts and four walks in 22 innings.Skubal allowed only two hits himself, the only run against him scored by Jake Cave on a double-play grounder hit by Eddie Rosario. Cave pinch-ran for rookie Brent Rooker, who produced Minnesota’s first hit to start the fifth. With the Tigers lugging a starting pitching ERA that was the second-worst in baseball at 6.47 entering the evening, the rookie Skubal delivered a well-timed gem by beating the Twins for the second straight Saturday. He gave up two runs on three hits in five innings in Detroit last weekend. The Twins and Tigers are playing 10 times in a 26-day span from Aug. 29 to Sept. 23.The defending AL Central champion Twins entered the evening third in the division — but only one-half game behind the leader Chicago, with Cleveland in between.FOR STARTERSReyes is batting .357 in his last 13 games (20 for 56) since sliding up to the leadoff spot on Aug. 22, with 11 runs and six RBIs in that span. The center fielder hit his second career leadoff homer.TRAINER’S ROOMTigers: SS Niko Goodrum was placed on the injured list with a strained right oblique muscle. He last played on Tuesday. Castro will take Goodrum’s place for now. “We all believe Willi’s going to be a big league shortstop,” manager Ron Gardenhire said.Twins: C Alex Avila went on the injured list with lower back tightness, and Willians Astudillo was added to the roster to back up Ryan Jeffers with regular Mitch Garver already on the injured list. … 2B Luis Arraez missed his third straight game with patellar tendon soreness in his left knee.UP NEXTTigers: RHP Casey Mize (0-1, 6.75 ERA) pitches Sunday afternoon. Mize, the first overall pick in the 2018 draft, has yet to finish the fifth inning in his first three major league starts.Twins: LHP Rich Hill (1-1, 3.94 ERA) takes the mound for the fourth game of the series. Hill is 3-0 with a 3.77 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 28 2/3 career innings against Detroit.Image credits: AP last_img read more

Coke’s top test lab opens in SA

first_imgThe Coca-Cola contour bottle, SouthAfrican style. (Image: Coca-Cola)Janine ErasmusCoca-Cola, the world’s top beverage manufacturer, has opened a state-of-the-art laboratory complex in Midrand, north of Johannesburg. The African Technical Centre is Coca-Cola’s most technologically advanced facility globally, the company says.Built in a year at a cost of R46.6-million (US$6-million) and opened earlier in 2008, the new centre tests Coca-Cola products from 162 bottlers in 56 African countries. Finished products, raw materials and waste are tested every month to ensure African-produced Coca-Cola products consistently keep to the high standard they have already set.The Midrand facility offers analytical and technical support, conducting physical and chemical tests that include temperature, pressure, water quality and acid content. It will have a staff complement of 32 skilled employees, of which 19 will be new jobs.Coca-Cola South Africa president William Egbe said at the opening ceremony that the company’s substantial investment was proof of its belief in South Africa as a place to do business, and was not deterred by the recent power crisis. Egbe added that Coca Cola will use South Africa as the basis for its activities across the continent.Minister of Science and Technology Mosibudi Mangena was also in attendance at the opening ceremony, and said that the centre would help to promote good laboratory practice in South Africa. It would also uplift the African region and contribute valuable skills.“It will also leverage analytical capability, increase employment opportunities, and trigger innovation within the chemical industry,” he said. “We regard the Africa Technical Centre as a good example of your commitment to the upliftment of both industry and our people, leading to higher levels of economic growth and development, particularly through science and technology.According to Mangena, Coca-Cola directly contributes about R8.4-billion ($1.1-billion) to South Africa’s GDP and, directly and indirectly, is responsible for a remarkable 1.4% of the country’s GDP.Coca-Cola vice-president Carletta Ooton added that the company had invested in the most sophisticated analytical equipment available, and would use the laboratory as part of its strategy to build a greater understanding of its ingredients and products, as well as support global innovation and sustainable business values.Coca-Cola will open four other such facilities around the globe. One has already been established in China and the others will open in Mexico, Belgium and the US by the end of 2009.Supporting developing marketsCoca-Cola’s director of global laboratory operations John Ward says the trio of facilities would ensure product quality and support the company’s long-term growth in developing markets. “We need to extend our technical capability throughout those regions at a local level.”Ward said that the company was previously focused mainly on its headquarters in Atlanta, US, and European regional base in Brussels.According to Brandchannel.com, Coca-Cola is South Africa’s most admired brand name, and the leader in overall brand awareness, achieving a rating of 42%. South Africa is the company’s largest market in Africa, outselling by two-and-a-half times the next biggest market Nigeria, and accounting for 40% of the company’s entire African revenue. In 2006 Coca-Cola relocated its Africa region headquarters from Windsor in the UK to Johannesburg, indicating its commitment to its African, and particularly South African, market.A solid reputationCoca-Cola South Africa has been named as the country’s third most reliable company, according to the 2008 Reputation Institute survey, which was conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers. It came in behind cellular provider Vodacom in the top position, followed by petrol manufacturer Sasol. The margins between the companies were very small, with Vodacom scoring 71.56%, Sasol 71.38% and Coca-Cola SA 71.18%.Coca-Cola in South Africa is manufactured and distributed by Amalgamated Beverage Industries (ABI), which in turn is part of the SABMiller stable. SABMiller bought out ABI’s minority shareholders in 2004 and delisted the company from the JSE stock exchange. SABMiller then sold ABI to its South African division, the South African Breweries.ABI, which originally listed on the JSE in 1989, and Coca-Cola have worked together under a franchise agreement for three decades, and ABI also distributes, Schweppes, Sparletta and Appletiser products in South Africa, as well as the Nestlé brand Nestea and a range of other juices, energy drinks and flavoured waters. The company operates six manufacturing plants around the South Africa, employing some 3 700 people, and its plants in Durban, Midrand and Pretoria, in particular, are regarded as world-class facilities.Do you have queries or comments about this article? YouTube Gets a Cloud-Based Video Editor

first_imgIf you have found yourself like I recently have – stuck with video on an iPhone and a netbook, but no real way to edit it – then fret no more, because YouTube has added an editor. While the YouTube Video Editor is certainly nothing to compete with the likes of Final Cut Pro or Premiere, it has the basic functionality needed to finally make it possible for those living the ultra-mobile, ultra-lightweight lifestyle to put their videos online without having to leave all the unwieldy odds and ends. Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting The editor is simple and intuitive, with a drag-and-drop interface showing a full thumbnail inventory of all of your videos. Editing a video consists of setting a starting and stopping point for each clip, so if you want to select multiple clips from the same video, you simply drag that video to the bar below and repeat the process for each clip. In much the same way, different videos, or clips from those videos, can be spliced together. Of course, rough editing like this can leave some interesting audio, so YouTube also provides you with audio tracks to overlay over the entire video from its AudioSwap library. Two caveats come with using the audio overlay – adding an audio track from the AudioSwap library will permanently erase the audio track on the mashed-up video and YouTube says that it may display advertisements on videos using these audio tracks.
