HYDERABAD: A video of a specially-abled child defying odds to bowl at the nets amazed batting great V.V.S Laxman as the former ace batsman took to social media, saluting the spirit of human endurance and strength.Laxman on Sunday shared a video on his official Twitter handle where a specially-abled child is seen bowling at the nets. “The human spirit is one of ability, perseverance and courage that no situation can steal away. Salute to the spirit of human endurance and strength,” he said in his tweet along with the video. Laxman had previously lauded a mathematics teacher in Ladakh who is making sure his students do not miss out on much even though he has tested positive for COVID-19, saying his spirit is an inspiration. “Kifayat Hussain, a Maths teacher from Leh tested positive for Covid19, despite this he has been taking online classes for his students from the isolation centre. Such spirit is an inspiration,” Laxman had tweeted with a picture of the man. Laxman is also doing online sessions with Bengal cricketers as he is the batting consultant for Cricket Association of Bengal’s project Vision Programme. Laxman also recently recalled the “best battle” he has seen on a cricket field between two masters of the game – Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Warne. IANS
By Simon Jennings (REUTERS) – Liverpool scored three times in nine minutes on the way to a dramatic 4-3 win over Manchester City on Sunday which ended the Premier League leaders’ unbeaten start to the season.Liverpool struck after less than 10 minutes when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain surged forward from midfield to collect a neat layoff from Roberto Firmino and send a low shot past City keeper Ederson.Leroy Sane equalised shortly before the interval, but Liverpool blew City away after halftime with Firmino chipping Ederson to restore the home side’s lead and Sadio Mane striking from the edge of the box.Egypt international Mohamed Salah looked to have completed the rout when he collected Ederson’s clearance and sent the ball sailing back over the stranded keeper’s head, but City substitute Bernardo Silva grabbed one back and midfielder Ilkay Gundogan prodded home in stoppage-time.City’s first league defeat in 23 games this season left them 15 points clear at the top, ahead of Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea.“Congratulations to Liverpool for the victory,” City manager Pep Guardiola told Sky Sports.”The game was in our hands at 1-1 but our finishing was not good and then it went suddenly to 4-1. You have to live this kind of situation in the season.“The reality is we lose the game, we have a week to recover and prepare for the Newcastle game. All credit to the opponent, we know how difficult it is against a Juergen Klopp team, so aggressive, at Anfield too. We did a good performance apart from a few minutes.”Against the runaway leaders and without Brazilian Philippe Coutinho following his big-money move to Barcelona, Liverpool started strongly and their high pressing game was vindicated when Oxlade-Chamberlain surged forward and finished brilliantly.DESERVED EQUALISERIn an entertaining match which produced chances at both ends, City began to assert themselves before a deserved equaliser.Kyle Walker’s brilliant pass beat Joe Gomez and Sane, having controlled the ball superbly with his chest, fizzed a shot past Loris Karius’s weak attempted save at his near post. The game continued at the same frantic pace after the break with chances for both sides before Liverpool, in one of the most irresistible attacking displays of the season, scored three times in nine blistering minutes.Firmino lifted a deft finish over Ederson to restore their lead before Mane – just seconds after curling a shot against the post – unleashed an unstoppable drive into the top corner with his left foot. With Anfield in raptures and the visitors looking shell-shocked, Ederson’s attempted clearance only found Salah who controlled the ball before clipping it over the Brazilian from long range.
Finn Harps have the perfect opportunity to record back-to-back home wins when they host bottom of the table Salthill Devon at Finn Park on Friday night (kick-off 8pm).Two weeks ago Harps ended a recent dismal run of results when they defeated Wexford Youths courtesy of Kevin McHugh’s strike at Finn Park.Although they went down to Enda Curran’s second-half goal in Athlone last Friday, Peter Hutton’s side will be hoping to build on the Wexford win with another victory when Salthill visit on Friday. Harps have a decent home record in 2013 with only Athlone Town and Waterford United having left Finn Park with victories. And with Salthill departing Finn Park with just one draw in seven previous visits to Ballybofey, you can see why Harps supporters are hopeful of another victory on Friday. However, Harps should be wary of the threat posed by Friday’s visitors – who have won twice in their last four games – after what happened when the two sides met in Drom in mid-June.Then, with Harps expected to leave the County Galway venue with three points, Devon recorded their first home victory of the season on a 2-1 scoreline. “That was the final game before the break in which we lost in the final minutes of the game,” said Harps boss Peter Hutton as he looked back on that game earlier this week. “Salthill had prior to then and even of late recorded some good results and have added a few new faces to their ranks also, so they will be a tough nut to crack.”“Salthill last week lost to Waterford but from what I’m lead to believe they were unfortunate and the game was finely balanced for a long period of time with Waterford enjoying a fair share of lady luck,” continued Hutton.“Either way though we are at home and need the three points to get ourselves back on track and if we can apply the same work ethic and application as last week then I’ve no doubt we’ll be fine.”Hutton was disappointed that his side didn’t build on the victory over Wexford with a similar result in Athlone last week, especially as he felt his team were the best side on the night.A 1-0 victory for Roddy Collins table topping side put them two points clear at the top of the table. “It was very disappointing that we came away with nothing from a game we were fairly comfortable in and certainly deserved something from,” said Hutton of the game in Lissywollen.“Ciaran Gallagher had little to do for the majority of the game and generally we looked assured and had a few good chances ourselves but again unfortunately we didn’t take them. The players acquitted themselves well and were bitterly disappointed they got nothing for all their efforts but it merely shows the fine line between winning and losing in this league.”However, all is not lost and a play-off spot is still within reach for Harps should they go on an unbeaten run between now and the end of the season.“We are fortunate that the play off spot is still within our control but we really need to be winning games now and building a bit of momentum going into the final games. This is the period of the season when results are upper most and performances are secondary it’s now all about getting points on the board,” said Hutton. Harps will be without Michael Doherty who misses out through suspension. In what has become a Christmas tradition, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales posted a personal appeal for donations to the Wikimedia Foundation earlier this month. On the first day alone, the nonprofit raised $430,000 from 13,000 people. Today, Wales announced that Wikimedia reached its fundraising goals. In total, the foundation managed to raise $7.5 million. Last year, when Wales posted a similar appeal, the Wikimedia Foundation received $6.2 million from 125,000 donors.Still No Ads Wikipedia and other Wikimedia properties like Wikiquote or Wikibooks could easily find enough advertisers to finance these sites. In order to remain as independent and impartial as possible, however, the Wikimedia Foundation prefers to rely on donations from users. It is worth noting, though, that the Wikipedia does have deals with some other companies like France Telecom’s Orange. These businesses license the site’s content and share advertising revenue with the Wikimedia Foundation. The Wikimedia Foundation has fewer than 35 employees and needs roughly $10 million per year to operate. About 340 million users access Wikipedia per month. Last year, consumers bought 184 million devices with touchscreens. Gartner predicts that this market will surpass 362 million units this year. By 2013, Gartner predicts, touchscreen mobile devices will account for 80% of all sales in North America and Europe. Once the domain of high-end devices, touchscreen are now finding their ways into midrange phones and a growing number of consumers now expects all of their screens to be touch-enabled.As Gartner analyst CK Lu notes, a touchscreen alone won’t be enough to convince users to buy a specific phone, however. According to Lu, “Consumers won’t buy a mobile device purely for the touch UI, Touch technology is just an enabler, and ultimately, it is a compelling user experience — which includes good UI design, applications and services — that will make or break a product.” Indeed, Gartner advised manufacturers to double down on their efforts to create good touch-driven UIs. While Gartner doesn’t mention the iPhone explicitly, it is clear that Apple’s popular phone has set the standard for touch-driven UIs and most manufacturers are still struggling to catch up. Bonus: What Does the Mobile, Touch-Friendly Web Look Like Today? The mobile web, according to a new report from mobile search engine Taptu, is currently all about shopping and services. Taptu – which specializes in indexing mobile sites – surveyed about 326,000 sites that are optimized for mobile, finger-friendly browsing and found that the largest concentration of these sites falls into Taptu’s “shopping and services” category. In total, Taptu found 83,000 mobile-enabled commerce sites, ranging from mobile shopping assistants to banks and mobile real estate sites.According to Taptu, mobile shopping and services sites make up close to 25% of all mobile-friendly sites in the company’s index, followed by sites in the “photo and design” category (17.7%). Social sites rank third with 9.2%. Personal blogs only make up 1.5% of Taptu’s index, a number if is easily bested by adult sites, which account for 3% of all mobile-optimized sites. It’s worth noting that if we combine news and weather sites (3.3%) together with sites about world affairs (8.1%), this category would easily fall into Taptu’s top 3. OTTAWA — Federal Infrastructure Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne says an overhaul of how the government approves funding for projects should solve concerns about construction delays and escalating costs. The government has been criticized for the slower-than-anticipated pace of infrastructure dollars leaving the federal treasury. For the rest of the winter, federal officials will sign off on plans so money and work are ready to roll come spring, which Champagne says will finally align bureaucratic processes with Canada’s construction season. The backroom change is one Champagne hopes will address public concerns that cities hold off work until they are sure the Liberals will chip in money, which also worsens cost overruns.Under the Liberals, planned federal spending on new roads, bridges, highways, trains and water systems over the coming decade has risen to $186 billion. As 2018 comes to a close, Champagne says there are some 4,400 projects worth $50 billion on the go, of which about $20 billion is from federal investments. The Canadian Press
