JRAD Delivers Three Debuts On Second Night Of Brooklyn Bowl Run [Photos/Video]

first_imgPhoto: Andrew Blackstein Photo: Andrew Blackstein Photo: Andrew Blackstein Joe Russo’s Almost Dead returned to Brooklyn Bowl for the second night of their March run at the venue that birthed them. The Friday night show saw the Grateful Dead tribute act throwing out teases left and right and included a couple of big JRAD debuts in addition to some moments of individual musical prowess.JRAD jammed their way into “Eyes of the World” to kick off the show before working a few teases of Marvin Gaye‘s “What’s Going On” into the opening tune. Some improvisational back-and-forth from keyboardist Marco Benevento and guitarist Tom Hamilton then gave way to a lengthy “Dancing In The Streets” that turned up the energy level as Benevento and drummer Joe Russo sprinkled in a few teases of their Benevento/Russo Duo favorite “Becky”. Another deep dive into “The Music Never Stopped” followed, with the tune flowing seamlessly into a crowd-pleasing “Tennessee Jed”. The group then wrapped up the five-song set with a cover of Junior Parker‘s “Next Time You See Me”—yet another nod to original Grateful Dead keyboardist Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, who often sang the tune during the band’s early years (Thursday marked the 45th anniversary of Pigpen’s death).JRAD – “Eyes of the World” [Pro-Shot][Video: Nugs.tv]Joe Russo’s Almost Dead – “Dancing In The Streets”[Video: monihampton]Joe Russo’s Almost Dead – “Next Time You See Me”[Video: monihampton]JRAD kicked off the second stanza in style with a “Wild Thing” tease that opened the band’s first “Iko Iko” in over three years. The Mardi Gras standard set up an extended jam that included hints of Ornette Coleman‘s “Theme From A Symphony” before segueing right into a “Black Throated Wind” that zipped into “Bertha”. “Feel Like A Stranger” was a Grateful Dead mainstay through the 1980s, and the version that followed last night’s “Bertha” got taken into serious ’80s territory with prominent teases of Peter Gabriel‘s “Sledgehammer” and Bell Biv Devoe‘s new jack swing classic “Poison”.JRAD – “Eyes of the World” [Pro-Shot][Video: Nugs.tv]One of the night’s more memorable moments came next as the band hit the opening notes of “Peggy – O”, a staple of the Grateful Dead repertoire that—somehow, surprisingly—has never gotten the JRAD treatment. Hamilton held down vocals on the debut, which eventually moved on to lengthy, energetic “Playing In The Band” that almost gave way to the “Terrapin Suite” (look out for that one at tonight’s Brooklyn Bowl closer, folks). Finally, the spotlight fell on Benevento as he closed out the set with a solo jam built around Madonna‘s “Borderline”, which Russo later said was the first song the pair ever played together. After a quick encore break, the band returned for yet another debut, this time of the Bobby and Shirley Womack classic “It’s All Over Now” (which was an early hit for the Rolling Stones in 1964). Hamilton sand the tune, which included a few teases of “Cumberland Blues”.JRAD will return to the Brooklyn Bowl tonight for the final show of their run at the venue. They will continue their March tour next week when they head to the Landmark Theatre in Syracuse on Thursday, March 15th. Music Festival Sues Coachella Over ‘Monopolistic’ Radius Clauses

first_imgSoul’d Out Productions, the group behind Portland, Oregon’s Soul’d Out Music Festival, is suing California’s popular Coachella Music & Arts Festival. The suit was filed at the U.S. District Court’s in Oregon on Monday.Portland Business Journal reports that the primary issue is a “contractual restriction” that prevents artists who have been booked by Coachella from playing “at any other festival or themed event within a distance that extends over 1,300 miles” for five months before or after Coachella. Soul’d Out Productions alleges that the so-called radius clause is a “monopolistic practice” that has injured its business, which is located over 1,000 miles from the site of Coachella. The suit claims that Coachella’s practice violates federal antitrust laws, as well as antitrust laws in Oregon and California. The plaintiffs allege that the radius clauses limit consumer choice and force promoters and fans alike to pay higher prices, adding that artists have declined to perform at the Soul’d Out Festival as a result of Coachella’s radius clause. “We seek no less than to operate in a fair and open environment,” Soul’d Out Productions co-owner and co-founder Nicholas Harris reportedly said in a release. “But as our industry has become more consolidated, it is subjected to more and more corporate tactics that penalize the public. Music, and the culture that births it, is not a commodity to be exploited. It is meant to inspire and enrich our lives.”Evidently, Soul’d Out’s goal is “to bar Coachella and its AEG affiliates from enforcing any performance contracts that contain such a radius clause, and also seeks treble damages from injuries caused by their unlawful actions and attorneys’ fees spent bringing this lawsuit.” The company is currently represented by Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt PC.As previously reported, Coachella will return to the Empire Polo Fields in Indio, CA over the next two weekends: April 13-15 and April 20-22. Beyonce, Eminem, and The Weekend are set to headline, and many of the fest’s biggest performances will be streamed online for free. The Soul’d Out Festival, on the other hand, will feature Erykah Badu, De La Soul, Wyclef Jean, Tipper, Noname, and more when it takes place April 18-22.[H/T Portland Business Journal]last_img read more

Watch Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper’s Hot And Heavy Performance Of “Shallow” At The Oscars

first_imgOn Sunday night, Hollywood celebrated its biggest night of the year at the 91st Annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles. The evening featured a number of notable storylines, from Spike Lee nabbing his first-ever Oscar for “Best Adapted Screenplay” (BlacKkKlansman) to Bohemian Rhapsody taking home four awards including a “Best Actor in a Leading Role” statue for Rami Malek‘s portrayal of Queen‘s embattled frontman, Freddie Mercury. However, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper‘s duet performance of “Shallow”, the hit song from their multiple Oscar-nominated film, A Star Is Born, was what set the Internet ablaze during the ceremony. In the film, the song serves as a significant plot point in the love story between Cooper and Gaga’s respective characters, a musical representation of new yet star-crossed love. It was clear from their Oscar performance that the chemistry between the two is still as strong as ever. The sexual and emotional tension was palpable—particularly when Cooper made his way to Gaga’s piano bench to help sing the song’s final refrain. They didn’t quite make out onstage, but they may as well have.Related: Lady Gaga And Bradley Cooper Perform “Shallow” During Surprise Live Debut In Las Vegas [Watch]Whether it was the song itself, the chemistry between the two performers, or some combination of the two, the powerful ballad made a strong impression on more than just the viewers in theaters and at home. “Shallow” wound up taking home “Best Original Song” honors later in the evening.
